Poem Title:  Letting Go

Poem Category:  In Memoriam

Poet:  Anonymous

Poet Biography:
There are surprisingly many good poems which are anonymous. These can be anonymous (unknown writer) for a variety of reasons and rarely impact upon their worth as a poem.

Poem:
This is an unusual poem in that it is hotly disputed as to who is the author. You can read the forum discussion here. It is listed here as anonymous as doubt exists. One of the first publications of it appears in 1972 but appears, according to some as having been copyrighted in 1986.

Version One

God saw you getting tired
And a cure was not to be,
So He put His arms around you
And whispered “Come with Me.”
With tearful eyes we watched you suffer
And saw you fade away.
Although we loved you dearly,
We could not make you stay.
A golden heart stopped beating,
Laying loving hands at rest,
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes the best.

Version Two:

God saw you getting tired
And a cure was not to be
So he put His arms around you
And whispered "Come to me."

With tearful eyes we watched you
As you slowly slipped away
And though we loved you dearly
We couldn't make you stay.

Your golden heart stopped beating
Your tired hands put to rest
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes the best.
